On a whim last year, I ordered a case of vegetarian pre-cooked Loma Linda Linketts from Amazon.com. I have to admit though, when they arrived and I read the label closely, I was a bit hesitant. I thought, "How can something made mostly of soy protein and soy flour be any good"? Next I thought, "Don't hot dogs have to contain some sort of beef to taste good?" I had tried vegetarian hot dogs before and I didn't think they weren't any good unless they were buried in mustard.

I opened the can, heated them up and became hooked after the first bite! Not only do they taste great, there's only 70 calories per Linkett! Each one also has 7 grams of protein, 1 g of sugar and only 160 mg of sodium. In comparison, 1 Hebrew National Beef Frank is a whopping 150 calories with 500 mgs of sodium but only 6 grams of protein. Currently, the Linketts are selling at 4.89 ($58.68 for 12 cans), while Hebrew National is priced at $5.79 for a pack of 7 franks, so they are very competitively priced. But even if they weren't, I'd still be willing to pay extra because Linketts are shelf-stable and more nutritious than any frankfurter I've ever seen. Oh yeah, and they also taste better than any other frankfurter I've tried, beef or vegetarian.

I haven't gotten around to trying all the different products offered by Loma Linda/Worthington, but I'm also a big fan of the canned vegetarian Redi-Burger. It's pre-cooked, low fat and makes a great alternative to ground beef, whether it's used in hamburgers, meatloaf or tacos. Eacht 85 gram serving (nearly 3 ounces) contains only 120 calories and 2.5 grams of fat. Did I mention that it tastes good too?
